Beautiful 19th century view of New York Bay and Lower Manhattan
Description
This elegant steel engraving from Meyer’s Universum depicts New York Bay, as seen from Hoboken, New Jersey, around the middle of the 19th century. Looking across the Hudson River in a southeasterly direction, the view takes in Lower Manhattan, in the distance to the left, with about half a dozen church towers discernible.
Engraved by J.[ohann Gabriel Friedrich?] Poppel, after an artwork by W.[ilhelm ("William")?] Heine, from 1850.
A lovely look back, to a time when New York was starting to rapidly grow.
