A curious French map of the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region
Description
This unusual map by Pierre Bertholon centres on Virginia and Maryland, partially showing adjoining states.
Relief is depicted pictorially, numerous waterways and settlements are named, and state borders are outlined. Maryland is truncated in the west and shows a simplified border to the southwest, as if conjectured. Virginia features dubious “Tobacco Mountains” (Tabaco Montagnes). Among other, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Alexandria (Belhaven ou Alexandrie), Fredericksburg, Petersburg, and Norfolk are clearly identified. In the North Atlantic, the United States are mentioned (Etats Unis).
There is a simple title cartouche at bottom right and a basic distance scale at bottom left.
