Unusual French map of the North Atlantic
Description
Applying a conical projection, this map reaches from the Arctic Circle to the equator, taking in parts of the eastern coastlines of the Americas as well as Western Europe and northwestern Africa.
Across the regions shown, the map identifies former and present (i.e. up to c. 1724) British claims and possessions, including the colonies in North America.
Florida appears highly distorted.
An annotation at lower right mentions that, south of the equator, Great Britain also holds St. Helena, with the island’s coordinates provided as well.
The map is aligned to the El Hierro (Ferro) prime meridian.
A rare and intriguing map of British interest.
