Manesson-Mallet map of Poland with unique provenance
Description
This map focuses on Poland, depicting the region between the Gulf of Finland, western Russia, Romania, and eastern Germany.
The map is adorned by a drape-style title cartouche, at the bottom centre of which is a stylised coat of arms, surmounted by a crown and flanked by two quivers.
An alternate German title, das Königreich Poln. [i.e. The Kingdom of Poland], is shown at top, above the neatline.
This map is from a German edition of Manesson-Mallet’s popular Description de l'univers …, first published by Denys Thierry in Paris, in 1683.
It has royal provenance, with the stamp at the top right showing at its centre the Russian imperial coat of arms (a crowned two-headed eagle), with “Chancellery of His Imperial Majesty”, written in Russian, wrapped around it.

Provenance
Evidence of provenance includes:
- At top right, a stamp showing at its centre the Russian imperial coat of arms (a crowned two-headed eagle), with “Chancellery of His Imperial Majesty”, written in Russian, wrapped around it.
- At bottom right and at top of verso, an illegible manuscript signature.
