Manesson-Mallet map of Scandinavia and the Baltics with unique provenance
Description
This map focuses on Scandinavia and the Baltics, depicting the region between the North Cape, western Russia, northern Germany and Poland, and the North Sea.
The map is adorned by decorative title cartouche. Two sailing ships are shown in the Norwegian and Barents seas.
An alternate German title, die Nordischen Königreiche. [i.e. The Nordic kingdoms], is shown at top, above the neatline.
This map is from a German edition of Manesson-Mallet’s popular Description de l'univers …, first published by Denys Thierry in Paris, in 1683.
It has royal provenance, with the stamp at the top right showing at its centre the Russian imperial coat of arms (a crowned two-headed eagle), with “Chancellery of His Imperial Majesty”, written in Russian, wrapped around it.

Very good.
Minor fraying along bottom edge. Minor dampstains at top left and right, contained to margin. A few faint spots in bottom margin. Former ownership stamp at top right and ownership and inventory manuscript annotations at bottom right and centre as well as top on verso.
Provenance
Evidence of provenance includes:
- At top right, a stamp showing at its centre the Russian imperial coat of arms (a crowned two-headed eagle), with “Chancellery of His Imperial Majesty”, written in Russian, wrapped around it.
- At bottom right and at top of verso, an illegible manuscript signature.
