Rare and decorative Van Keulen sea chart of the British Isles
Description
This is Johannes van Keulen’s second sea chart of the British Isles. It derives from his maritime atlas De nieuwe groote lichtende zee-fakkel, ..., first published in 1681 in Amsterdam.
Oriented to the east, the chart shows the English Channel, England, Scotland, Ireland and the Normandy. It presents the respective coastlines with much detail, naming countless locations.
The northeast coast of Great Britain is obscured by the chart’s decorative title cartouche, which contains an idyllic rural scene. It shows a shepherd boy taking a break from tending to his flock of sheep and goats. He is resting in a relaxed position, with his dog to his left and a picnic basket to his right.
Further decorative elements of the chart include the coats of arms of France and Ireland as well as a galleon northwest of Ireland.
The chart features two compass roses and a rhumbline network.
Maritime details include soundings and shoals.
At the bottom left of the chart, three distance scales are provided, one each for German, Spanish, and English and French miles.
A scarce and beautiful chart of Great Britain and Ireland.
Condition
Very good.
Printed on watermarked paper. Issued folding, now flattened. Beautiful colouring in outline, to cartouche, and to embellishments. Minor toning to upper corners, contained to margins. Light foxing throughout, with a few spots causing pinholes, only visible against light. On verso, professional minor reinforcements along lower centrefold, not visible on recto.
