Rare and beautiful Van Keulen sea chart of the Western Mediterranean
Description
This sea chart was first created by Johannes van Keulen, with the present example a later reengraving by his son Gerard van Keulen. It shows the Western Mediterranean from Gibraltar in the west to Sicily and Malta in the east, taking in the adjoining coastlines of Spain, France, and Italy as well as the Barbary Coast. An inset to the upper left depicts the Adriatic Sea, featuring here as the Gulf of Venice.
Similar to portolan charts, geographical detail is concentrated along the coastlines, with countless locations named.
Navigational elements include rhumb lines, soundings, and an indication of shoals.
The title cartouche displays the chart’s title in five languages – Dutch, French, English, Spanish, and Italian. To the right of it, an annotation confirms that the chart was published by Van Keulen in Amsterdam with privilege.
The chart features six compass roses, one of which inland and two of which in the inset.
Four distance scales are displayed at the bottom of the main chart, with another two shown in the inset.
A scarce and decorative chart of the western part of the Mediterranean Sea.
Condition
Very good.
Printed on two sheets, now joined as one, with two vertical foldlines. Beautiful colouring throughout. Narrow margins at left, right, and bottom. At top, professionally remargined (inconspicuous).
