Highly decorative French map of Malta
Description
This detailed and visually appealing map of the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino was created by Charles Amadeus de Berey. It was first published in 1726, in Jacques Rollin’s Histoire des chevaliers hospitaliers de S. Jean de Jérusalem, appellez depuis les chevaliers de Rhodes et aujourd’hui les chevaliers de Malte.
Oriented to the west-southwest, the map is full of topographic detail. Vertical (slope) hachures are used to depict relief, while vegetation is shown pictorially. Many locations are named, with settlements indicated using building symbols. The road network is laid out neatly. Importantly, and in line with the map title, there is detailed representation of fortifications and defense installations, which were rebuilt or strengthened following the 1693 Sicily earthquake, which affected Malta significantly. Heavily fortified Valletta features prominently.
At upper right, the map includes two distance scales.
There is a compass rose at centre bottom.
A drape-style title cartouche is located in the lower right corner.
This map served as the basis for Bernard Antoine Jaillot’s map of Malta from 1734.
