Very rare map of greater Paris by Le Rouge
Description
This beautiful 18th century map of Paris and its environs shows what today is mostly the metropolitan area of the French capital as well as some of the adjacent Île-de-France communes. It reaches from present-day Piscop (Piscot), Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt (St. Brice), and Villiers-le-Bel in the north to Longjumeau (Lonjumeau) in the south, and from Torcy in the east to Villepreux in the west.
Easily identifiable locations other than the historic centre of Paris include, among other, the districts or communes of Montmartre, Argenteuil, Saint-Denis, Montreuil, Saint-Cloud, and Versailles, as well as the parks Forêt domaniale de Saint-Germain (Forest de St. Germain), Bois de Boulogne, Bois de Vincennes (Parc de Vincenes), and Forêt de Bondy (Forest de Bondy).
At top left, a distance scale is provided.
A scarce and insightful map from a time when the “City of Light” was only a fraction of its current size.
Rarity
The map is very rare. While we did identify four institutional holdings, we were not able to trace any sales by dealers and auction houses over the last 40 years.
Condition
Very good.
Issued folding. Delicate colouring. Light toning and spotting, contained to blank margins. A few faint stains at top centre. Light corner creases, a few marginal tears, and a chip, all professionally repaired on verso.
