Uncommon chart of the English Channel by Van Keulen
Description
Oriented to the west, this sea chart by Gerard van Keulen focusses on the western end of the English Channel, taking in the adjacent coastlines of southwestern England and northwestern France. It reaches from the Isles of Scilly and the southern parts of Cornwall and Devonshire in the north to northwestern Brittany in the south.
Similar to portolans, geographical detail in Van Keulen’s chart is concentrated along the coastlines, with countless locations named and frequently symbolised through stylised buildings. In England, Penzance (Pensauce), Falmouth (Falmouthe), Penryn (Penrin), St. Blazey (St. Blaze), Looe (West Low and East Low), Plymouth (Plimouth), and Paignton (Painton) are easily identifiable, to name but a few. Notable French settlements include Brest, Saint-Pol-de-Léon (St. Paul de Leon), Morlaix, and Lannion (Lamion).
Navigational elements include rhumb lines, soundings, and an indication of shoals (stipple), submerged hazards (crosses), and the direction of sea currents (arrows).
The chart features a compass rose at its centre.
A large, simply decorated title cartouche is displayed at lower left. It shows the chart title in Dutch, French, and English. It also holds four distance scales – one each for Dutch miles, French and English leagues, Spanish leagues, and Swedish miles.
A nice example of this scarce Dutch sea chart.
