Highly detailed Burgundy map by Jansson

Description

This decorative map by Jan Jansson depicts the historical east-central French region of Burgundy in great detail.

The map features pictorial representation of relief, vegetation, towns, and cities. The Loire, Saône, and Rhône rivers stand out, as does Lake Geneva.

Amongst the countless placenames provided, easily identifiable locations include Auxerre, La Charité-sur-Loire (La Charite), Nevers, Dijon (Diion), Chalon-sur-Saône (Challon sur Saone), and Lyon, to name but a few.

At top right, the map features a decorative baroque-style title cartouche, flanked by two guard-like figures.

At bottom left, there is a small cartouche holding two distance scales. It is adorned with a vignette, showing an ox cart with a wine cask, suggestive of Burgundy’s importance as a wine-making region.

To the right of the distance scale, an annotation reading “Par Mr Samson : Geographe du Roy” suggests that Jansson might have based his map on Sanson’s 1648 map of the region, titled “Les Deux Bourgognes : Duché, et Comté. la Bresse, &c. la Souveraineté de Dombes, le Nivernois, &c.".

At bottom right, another annotation specifies Amsterdam (Amstelodami) as the map’s publishing location and Jansson as publisher.

Condition

Very good.

Issued folding. Uncoloured. A light printer’s smudge at each, lower left and right latitude scales. Light toning. A few faint stains, mostly in upper half. Centrefold splits at both ends, contained to blank margins and closed with archival tape on verso.
