Beautiful 19th century view of Jefferson City, Missouri
Description
This elegant steel engraving from Meyer’s Universum depicts Jefferson City, Missouri, around the middle of the 19th century. Prominently displaying the Missouri State Capitol, the view takes in the Missouri River, to the right.
The capitol building depicted is the second permanent structure built on this site to house the Missouri state government. It was completed in 1840 and burned down in 1911, after the previous capitol building (built on the same site) had burned down, too, in 1837. The current capitol building was completed on this site as well, in 1917.
A horse carriage and a steamship complete the scene.
The engraver of this view is not indicated. However, based on their other work for the same publication, we believe this to be [Hermann?] Ahrens or J.[ohann Gabriel Friedrich?] Poppel.
A delightful illustration of the early Missouri capital.
