Beautiful 19th century view of New York Bay and Lower Manhattan
Description
This elegant steel engraving from Meyer’s Universum depicts New York Bay, as seen from Staten Island, “near the lighthouse”, around the middle of the 19th century. Considering the time period as well as possible locations, we believe that the reference is to the former Fort Tompkins Lighthouse, near present-day Fort Wadsworth Lighthouse. If this is correct, then – looking across the Upper Bay, to the right of the lighthouse – Lower Manhattan can be seen in the far distance, with several church towers discernible, while the southwestern shore of present-day Brooklyn (Fort Hamilton / Bay Ridge) can be seen to the right. Throughout, numerous fishing boats and sailing ships adorn the scene.

A lovely look back, to a time when New York was starting to rapidly grow.
